Planned Site Additions

I know I launched this blog with tremendous fanfare (uh, okay, I just tweeted a link once :-P ) and then I seemingly abandoned it, but I promise, I haven’t.

I’m very much working on this blog and turning it into a collective writing workshop. I have tons of things planned that I’m wrangling together, the most time-consuming of which is figuring out guest/ghost authors and what they’ll be posting about. If you want to be one, email me. (Check the Contact & Networking page.)

What I’m working on:

  • Dialogue posts
  • Plot exercises
  • Title discussions
  • Industry talk (agents, publishers, editors)
  • Industry-Industry talk (copywriting, editing, grant writing, etc)
  • Possible free-lancing outlets
  • Romance genre
  • First line exercises
  • Free association
  • Flash fiction
  • and more!

So, yeah.

Tons of stuff coming, second year of law school be damned.

Blogging: More Than Just Words on a Screen

It wasn’t until I started law school that I realized just how important blogs were. I’d had a couple before. First, a Xanga, which I used to talk about my day and keep in touch with friends. Then, a blogger, that I thought would be a more sophisticated version of my Xanga and was tragically short-lived. Then a LiveJournal, which turned out pretty well but then got tedious. And finally, I moved on to WordPress[dotcom] for my law blog, and again for this blog.

I used to dislike the fact that I had so many blogs and I kept moving around and starting over, but now I’ve realized that blogs are really a very important tool in the job market and information highway of tomorrow.

Article: “Romeo and Juliet,” Shakespeare; “West Side Story”
August 3, 2009, 9:16 pm

This article, never published, examines the choice in the portrayal of Juliet in the actual play and a movie adaptation, “The West Side Story.” It is interesting to note that Juliet can be portrayed as a saintly virgin as easily as she can be portrayed as a sexually precocious temptress.

Article: “Othello,” Shakespeare

This short article examines the homoerotic undertones that inform the relationship between Iago and Othello in Shakespeare’s “Othello,” one of my absolute favorite plays by the Bard. (Tied only with “Hamlet,” which is a consummate masterpiece.)

This article has never been published.

Article: Cixous and Kushner on Progression
August 3, 2009, 9:11 pm

This is an article about Angels in America by Tony Kushner and “The Laugh of the Medusa,” an essay by Helene Cixous, and how both pieces examine the notion of progression. This was never published in any journal.

Book Review: “Moll Flanders,” Defoe

Filed under: Book Reviews, Writing Samples

My favorite book reviews aren’t the thumbs-up-or-thumbs-down kind but the kind that take a point within the novel and explore it. So I guess my favorite book reviews are analytical essays. Or rather, I find analytical essays much preferable to thumbs-up-thumbs-down book reviews. :-P

Either way.

Book Review: “Writing And Difference,” Derrida
August 3, 2009, 9:04 pm
Filed under: Book Reviews, Writing Samples

One of very few book reviews on this site. As I’ve said before, I’m a law student with very little time for recreational reading. If I do have free time, you can find me with my nose buried in a Gilbert’s supplement or casebook, not in a Times’ Bestseller, unfortunately.

But this review is special to me because Derrida is so notoriously dense, and I still read about his differance from cover to cover and managed to string some words together into a coherent summary and analysis. (More analysis than summary; it’s just how I’m trained.)

Take a look.

Article: Greyhounds

This article was published in a magazine for dog owners. The magazine wanted a short article about a specific breed, in this case, the greyhound. I submitted and they printed.

Article: Internet TV
August 3, 2009, 8:57 pm

This was an article I wrote for some tech magazine or e-zine. I can’t remember anything else about it. But it was published on a website/magazine that was chronicling the rise of television and musing about its future, and that was where I was called in to write. A lot of this information is dated, as this article was written several years ago.

Article: School Shootings
August 3, 2009, 8:54 pm

This was an article I wrote for a children’s safety website about school shootings. As with the skincare article, I have no idea what the website was called. All I know is that they wanted an article on this subject, I wrote it for them, received credit and payment, and that was it. I really should have kept better notes, but I didn’t.
